Abstract

The purpose of this research paper is to study the employees’ motivations to use social media at the workplace and its impact on their job satisfaction and work performance. A cross sectional survey was conducted in Pakistan’s software industry to investigate this. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from software industry employees. To test the relationships between variables, linear and multiple regression techniques were used. It was found that employees' hedonistic motivations to use social media while working provide pleasure, relaxation, and amusement. It was also discovered that utilitarian motivation is the rational motivation for people to use social media in order to achieve their work goals. The use of social media for both motivations has a positive impact on job satisfaction and work performance. Hence, organizations must allow social media usage at work with proper policy formulation to improve employee satisfaction and work performance.
